The Viliv X70 UMPC is now shipping through Dynamism. All but the cheapest version is in stock now. The UMPC features a solid state drive and 7 inch screen. If you want a step up from the S5 then take a look at the Viliv X70.

OQO shuts down operations

Looks like the end of OQO. Fansite OQO has posted this:

Apple Tablet In 2010

Based on close sources the Apple Tablet may be released in early 2010. The source plus Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster seem to confirm this.

Signs Pointing To A New Mobile Device. Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents (see here) relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.

Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7”-10”) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a “cheap” portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late (similar to the timing of iPod and iPhone), plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet (not a netbook).

No Netbook On The Horizon; Tablet A CY10 Event. We expect Apple to fill the gap between the iPod touch and the MacBook with a new tablet device (not a netbook) priced at about $500-$700. Apple will likely leverage its multi-touch patents to differentiate its product from the typical netbook. We are anticipating a new category of Apple products with an operating system more robust than the iPhone’s but optimized for multi-touch, unlike Mac OS X. The device’s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple’s mobile OS and run App Store apps, or it could be a modified version of Mac OS X. We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.

Apple’s Timing In Entering New Markets. Apple launched the first iPod in Oct-01, three years after the first portable MP3 player was on the market. Likewise, the iPhone debuted in Jun-07, five years after the first BlackBerry with email and mobile phone capabilities. With both products, Apple designed devices that were differentiated enough to gain significant market share despite its later entrance into the markets. We believe Apple is observing the netbook market in a similar way, and will eventually enter with a tablet, a premium mobile computing device.

OQO 02 motherboard failures

Seems like the OQO is going down fast. With the lack of support and OQO 02's now having problems, the ship is sinking quick. Board members of OQOTalk a fan site are reporting high volume of fail rate for 1.6GHZ VIA OQO 02's. My thought is it could be heat failure. The HP 2133 had a similar problem while both use metal frames and VIA chips these units get hot.

Limited Edition Viliv S5 D-Log MID with DMB

Korea will get a limited edition of the Viliv S5 with DMB in place of GPS. Specs will remain the same with 4.8 inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen, 1.33Ghz Intel Atom Z520 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, WIFI and Bluetooth.

Here is a clamshell PC coming out of China. The Yinlips TDB G80 features Samsung S3C443 533MHz processor, 4.3 inch touchscreen, 64mb internal memory, miniSD memory card slot, Windows Ce, and wifi and ethernet port. All this for a price of $189.99.

Dynamism offer extended for Viliv S5 deal

Dynamism sold out of the first stock of S5's. So with the second stock of S5's they will offer up the same freebies pack.

Second, we are provisioning an additional 400 Viliv S5 to be offered and bundled with the same accessory pack (car kit, spare battery, leather pouch - $135 value) for the same cost of $599. These will be offered from our second shipment, due on May 24.

OQO 02+ preorders canceled

Looks like another company is in trouble as OQO 02+ might not happen for OQO. According to a newletter from reseller BuildyourUMPC.com

JKontheRun First Look at the Viliv S5 Premium UMPC

James Kendrick over at JKontheRun has posted up a in deph first look at the Viliv S5. And it looks like he has positive things to say about the S5 saying:

I need to wrap this up but I intend to do a full HD video review of the Viliv S5 soon. So far I am impressed with the utility of the S5 and am enjoying the heck out of using it. These are my two most important criteria with mobile devices so I am leaning heavily toward spending my own money to get one of these babies. That’s pretty much my highest endorsement. :)

TechCrunch Tablet is totally awesome

Last time we heard about the TechCrunch Tablet it was a bulky working prototype. Well it's now cleaned up and looking great. We might see a finish product sooner than later. TechCrunch Tablet will also feature an Intel Atom processor and a 12″ capacitative touchscreen. No word on pricing. But if they can keep this close to the $200 original price they got a winner. I say $300 or $400 it still be a winner.

TG Lluon Mobbit UMPC

Here is a UMPC by TG called the Lluon Mobbit. The Korean UMPC features an 1.33Ghz Atom chip, Windows XP, 30GB hard drive with option for 16GB SSD, and 4.8 inch touchscreen. There is a chace this might be released in the U.S. if Averatec decides to rebrand it.

Gigabyte M528 MID $750 due out in late July

A new update from UMPCPortal states that the M528 will be priced around $750 in the Taiwan market and available in late July. The features have stayed the same since Computex sporting a 800Mhz Silverthorne/Poulsbo (Menlow),800×480 touchscreen, 3mp auto-focus cam and 4GB SSD, GPS, and 3G. Also having the ‘Merry-go-round’ user interface' a full set of application such as Firefox 3 engine, Skype, Pidgin IM, OpenOffice 2.4.

Buy.com is currently selling the Nokia N810 for $362.99. Considering I payed over $400 when I bought mine this is a good deal. The price is $86.01 off retail price. And included is free shipping too. Using Google checkout brings the price down by $10.

Wibrain B1H UMPC reviewed

Pocketable goes hands on with the ugly duckling of UMPC portables. The Wibrain B1H has a decent feature set but I just can't get past how ugly it is. Well Jenn Lee does an excellent job of showing off the UMPC in it's fully glory with 33 pictures in her photo review.

Aigo MID unboxing by UMPCFever

I'm really hyped about these MiD type devices. The main thing is they need to bring down the price to $500 or less to make this more viable than a niche product. The Aigo MID is probably one of the best that are currently making a showing. Well UMPC fever got a chance to go hands on with the device and was nice enough to do an unboxing.

OQO 02 now world's smallest Mac

A member of OQOTalk TRF has successfully put OS X on his OQO 02. The video proves the hard work. TRF as the member is called has setup the O2 to dual boot Vista and OS X booting Leopard in under 2 minutes and 30 seconds. WiFi, sound, power management and Bluetooth all work. WWAN access is still a work in progress and testing is being done to get it work.
