BlackBerry Co-CEO's replaced

Co-CEO's Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have stepped down and will be replaced with Thorsten Heins. This is after Blackberry has struggled to compete with iOS iphones and Android Phones. In my opinion this maybe the nail in the coffin for Blackberry as they will eventually go down or get acquired by someone else.

Eye-Fi not too happy with the SD association

Yuval Koren CEO of Eye-Fi is not happy that the SD Association created a Wireless LAN SD standard that is eearily similar to Eye-Fi. Basically SD Association created a standard to turn SD cards in to wifi SD cards. Eye-Fi patented this technology so they are not too pleased by this. Here is the full statement from Yuval Korean here

The SDA's iSDIO specification and standards process

Several years ago, Eye-Fi's founding team realized that capturing photos or video is just the beginning, and that in an increasingly connected world, the true magic is in sharing.

We invested tens of millions of dollars and several years to create unique technology that lets people wirelessly transfer photos and videos directly from their camera and mobile devices.

Last week, the SD Association (SDA) announced that a draft Wireless LAN specification had been adopted as a new standard. This was a flat out misrepresentation. As a matter of fact, under the SDA's own rules, this was not possible. SDA members – and we are one – are allowed 60 days in which to respond with claims to patented intellectual property and plans around licensing that IP to the SDA. Should essential IP be presented during this process, and not offered for license, the SDA should revise the specification and begin the review cycle again. After this process, the SDA Executive Members have to vote on adopting the specification.

Not only has the membership's intellectual property disclosure window not closed, the Executive Members have also yet to vote on its adoption.

When we protested the action, the SDA's executive director replied "the SD Association has often made announcements during the IP Review Period because once this phase of the process has been achieved the only thing that could possibly change is the licensing and not the technical details."

This week, still in advance of the SDA-provided deadline, we disclosed our patented intellectual property to the SDA, detailing multiple Eye-Fi patents essential to the current SDA draft specification.

There is a process for the establishment of this kind of specification, and that process wasn't respected. Any company trying to claim that it is the first to adopt this specification is taking on the mantle of a standard that doesn't exist.

Currently, 10 top camera manufacturers work with us as part of the Eye-Fi connected program; dozens of leading photo-related sites connect to our service. It's through these longstanding relationships that we've become the center of wireless connectivity among consumers, camera makers and photo-related sites.

The intellectual property at the core of this digital imaging revolution is our business. It's what Eye-Fi is. And as currently written, essential Eye-Fi patented technology would be violated by anyone implementing this draft specification.

We respect the process as established by the SDA and we call upon the SDA to do the same.

The-Gadgeteer reviews the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus maybe the best Smarphone on the planet. And now tech blog The-Gadgeteer has posted up a review of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus Smartphone.

All in all, I like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus quite a bit. If I were in the market for an Android phone right now, it would be the one I would probably buy even though it lacks a microSD card and I would have to deal with the annoying lack of the USB mass storage feature. Except for those 2 things, I love the huge display, snappy performance and quick camera. It’s definitely the phone to have right now due to the latest version of the OS and pure Android goodness.

Hanvon C-18 Mirasol e-reader Hands-On

Qualcomm unveiled its new C-18 Mirasol e-reader yesterday, and today, we managed to get our hands on it here at CES. Manufactured by Hanvon, this device is officially labeled as an e-reader, though to be honest, it felt more like a tablet to us. Unlike the lightweight Kindle, the C-18 felt a tad heavy in our hands, with backlighting more typical of a slate than reader. It also runs its own Android skin, which raises some interesting questions of how many Android apps it would support. The color Mirasol display certainly piqued our interests, though we'll have to wait a little bit longer before we get a closer look at it, as the C-18 won't hit the Chinese market until February, with no set date for a US launch yet (price remains equally opaque)

CES Windows 8 on ARM Tegra 3

We will soon see ARM processors like the Tegra 3 with the ability to run both Android and Windows 8. Nvidia showed of a prototype that shows this is possible. Intel and AMD will have to step up their game or lose market share for Tablets, PC's, and Smartphones.

Another item mentions at CES was that the 5th processor in the Tegra 3 can be used to process of touchscreen inputs that are normally handled by microcontrollers. Since the (Ninja) 5th processor is faster than microcontrollers it can triple performance of the touchscreen.
